ALBERTA -- Edmonton police are warning motorists to slow down on their way home from work as snow-covered roads make driving treacherous.

At about 2 p.m., a red Pontiac Sunfire slammed into a pole in northwest Edmonton.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was trapped in his car but conscious by the time emergency crews pried him loose and loaded him into an ambulance, said Const. Stu Saunders.

"Slow down," he said, sitting in his patrol car beside the wreck. "You can't drive as if the roads were clean."

Saunders said the man was driving north on 149th Street when he tried to avoid a vehicle turning left on 111th Avenue. The man swerved left, but his car slid to the right, slamming first into one light standard, then another several metres away. The man hit his head, and the airbags deployed. There is no word yet on his condition.
