Head-on collision kills Gatineau man

THE OTTAWA CITIZEN

QUEBEC - Police say alcohol may have played a role in a head-on collision that killed a 60-year-old Gatineau man Monday afternoon.

The man, who was in his 60s, apparently veered into the oncoming lane near Rue Saint-Louis and Rue de la Baie before he collided with a large truck just before 4:30 p.m. Part of his vehicle then caught on fire. A bystander helped put out the flames.

Firefighters then used the jaws of life to extract the man from the mangled vehicle.

Gatineau police said the man’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening while he was in an ambulance, but said his condition worsened once he arrived at the hospital. He was pronounced dead at around 7:20 p.m.

Officers are investigating the circumstances of the crash and say that alcohol may have been involved.
