NEWFOUNDLAND - RCMP in central Newfoundland report a male motorist was killed early Friday morning when his vehicle struck a moose.

The victim, whose age hasn't been determined, was the only occupant in the vehicle. He struck a moose on the Trans Canada Highway, four kilometres east of Jumpers Brook Bridge, police said.

The man had been driving westbound at the time of the 2:45am crash.

The man's name is being withheld while family members are being notified.

Staff at Education for the Driving Masses.com would like to remind all motorists to reduce their speed almost by half when driving through areas where signs indicate moose crossings. If you hit a moose at 60km/hr, your airbags and seatbelts will reduce your risk of fatality. You will be injured but you will probably survive. If you can swerve to avoid the moose, take your foot off the gas and "swerve right". This way, you are swerving off the road and not into oncoming traffic.

It is impossible to teach people to know how to swerve and handle a car by typing it over and over. Why not start a petition and pressure the government into mandatory drivers training? The government can spend 500 bucks for each person (or charge the person wanting to get licenced that) then they won't spend as much (millions) on health care for all the crashes your country has.

Because it's cheaper for each province to continue to pump millions into healthcare to pay for the injuries than pump the billions that would be needed to revamp the licensing systems for each province.

No minister wants the reponsibility. I haven't met one yet.

Yes, but typing anonymous, drive-by, one-off comments is the real way to get populist support, right?

And people who write driveby comments are part of the problem and not the solution. the keyboard cowboys are out breaking the laws and you guys are doing a great job making it obvious that it's not ok and that it needs to be dealt with.

you're site is awesome. keep it up.
