71-year-old man in Scarborough pedestrian collision succumbs to injuries

ONTARIO - A 71-year-old man has died following a pedestrian collision that occurred earlier this week at a parking lot in the city's east end.

Police say the victim was walking through the parking lot of Parkway Mall, at the corner of Ellesmere Road and Victoria Park Avenue, when he was hit by a Ford Explorer at about 6 p.m. Wednesday.

After the collision, the 50-year-old female driver of the Explorer got out her vehicle and attempted to speak with the man, but he was unconscious, police say.

The woman then got back into her vehicle and fled the scene, but she later turned herself into police.

The victim was taken to the hospital, and he succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

The death is the city's 43rd traffic fatality of 2009.
