Struck by SUV in north Burlington

ONTARIO -
A cyclist was seriously injured in a collision with an SUV on Dundas Street at Guelph Line this morning.

Halton police said the man, in his mid-30s who is believed to be from Mississauga or Oakville, was riding his bike east on Dundas Street when he collided with an SUV in the intersection just before 10 a.m.

The cyclists name has not been released.

Sergeant Brian Carr said the SUV had been westbound on Dundas moments before and was turning left, southbound onto Guelph Line.

The cyclist was taken by ambulance to Hamilton General Hospital. The full extent of his injuries was not immediately known.

Members of the Halton police collision reconstruction unit closed the intersection for approximately two hours for investigation. Dundas Street was closed from Walkers Line to Guelph Line which was closed from Driftwood Drive to 1 Sideroad.

According to police the cyclist was not wearing a helmet, and his injuries were extensive head injuries..... I have a very hard time feeling very sorry for this individual when not only did he not take the proper steps to protect his body (even professionals wear helmets and they are probably a much better cyclist than this man) but I firmly believe cyclist that cycle on roads, and cross 80 kph intersections are essentially playing Russian roulette..... Accidents like this are enevitable... Cyclist 0, vehcile 1 - doesn't matter who's fault it was, cyclists take their lives into their own hands
As a final thought, doesn't the law say you walk the bike through intersections?

Andrew - Wow, no sympathy for the victim who is now fighting for his life. When a 3500 lb SUV runs into a 35 lb bike there isn't much chance for the cyclist - even if they are wearing a helmet.

A bicycle is a vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act and as such has the right of way when travelling with a green light through an intersection. Vehicles making left hand turns must yield to through vehicles. The SUV driver failed to do so and should be charged.

Cyclist belong on the road (except restricted expressways) Here in the GTA, we are drowning in smog and congestion - yet doing nothing to protect those who are walking or cycling.

By the way - only cyclists who are using sidewalks are required to walk their bikes across intersections.
