3 teenage girls identified in Calgary two-vehicle collision: Emma Ransom, Cayley Chapman and Joillin Edgar

Parents: "We sorely miss our little girl"

ALBERTA -
One of the three teens killed in a crash that claimed four lives in all — sparing only a six-month old strapped in a car seat — is being remembered today as a loving daughter and sister who hoped to become a child psychologist.

Cayley Maureen Chapman, 18, died following a collision near Nanton Saturday afternoon. She and two friends were heading north on Highway 2 when their car crossed the median and hit a southbound vehicle carrying a woman and a baby. The baby was the sole survivor.

In a statement released Sunday morning by Chapman’s family, she was remembered for her volunteer work and love of children.

At times Chapman worked at Pine Lake Christian Camp, teaching crafts and music to campers and also taught Sunday school.

“We sorely miss our lovely girl,” the family said.

“There is no greater loss for a parent than that of their child and there is no greater comfort than in knowing that Cayley loved the Lord and is now safe in His arms.”

Chapman leaves behind two sisters, a brother, her parents, grandparents and a brother- and sister-in-law.

The two other girls who were also in the car when the crash occured have been identified as Joilinn Edgar, 19, and Emma Ransom, 19.

RCMP are not releasing the identities of the woman and baby in the southbound car until their family has been notified.

"We had a car headed northbound and as it came around the corner, it lost control," said Cpl. A.J. Mand of the RCMP in Nanton, 70 kilometres south of Calgary,

The female driver in the southbound car and three women in the northbound vehicle died at the scene, about two kilometres north of Nanton.

The baby went to a Calgary hospital via STARS air ambulance and had only minor cuts.

"It was found in the (car)seat, fine," Mand said.

The stretch of Highway 2 where the collision happened is flat, recently repaved and has a gentle curve just south of the crash scene.

Police said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash and are still trying to piece together why the northbound vehicle crossed the median.

Although police were only in the early stages of their investigation, Mand said conditions didn't immediately appear to be a factor.

"The weather, the road--everything is good so far," he said.

Debris from both vehicles littered the far side of the south lanes, making it appear the collision happened as the southbound car travelled in the curb lane. Both cars ended up in the ditch on the west side of the highway.

"They're both very, very damaged," Mand said.

The northbound car--an older-model blue sedan -- "is almost in two," said Mand.

The RCMP closed the southbound lanes for several hours while investigators examined the scene and interviewed witnesses.

"We have people going in both directions who witnessed the crash," said Mand.

Note - A FaceBook group, Emma Ransom, Cayley Chapman, Joillin Edgar Memorial has been created for family and friends to share memories and condolences.

Investigators say a small northbound vehicle on Highway # 2 South appears to have lost control as it rounded a corner.

The vehicle crossed the median slamming into a southbound vehicle.

There were three adults in the northbound car and one adult and a baby in the southbound car. The only survivor is the baby who was properly secured in a car seat. The baby was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

RCMP Cpl. A.J. Mand says officers are interviewing witnesses who saw it all happen.

"There were numerous people going in both directions. As soon as we can sit down with them and gather all witness statements we'll have a better idea of what happened here."

The names of the four victims have not been released as police are still notifying family members.

I saw that scene after the crash, while fire, police, and paramedics were still on scene. It was horrific. Absolutely horrific.

But I've got to say, I saw the child seat, and it was in excellent shape. If it came out of that absolutely dismantled white Chrysler Intrepid, I don't know how that could even be possible. Amazing a child survived that, no matter which vehidle he or she was in.

I see so many people driving so badly every day. But then you get to see two hundred metres of broken glass, ripped metal skin and broken plastic parts with a disfigured car at the end of it with a green tarp, it sure makes clear the consequences of the mistake people make while driving.

Seeing that made me want to slow down and do more to drive safely. I hope it had the same effect on many others.

Oh man ... oh geeze... a kid grows up without a mom/dad (don't know) because other drivers screw up... jesus.

The mother with the child is the sister of a friend of the other three victims. This is very very sad.

Very!

The only thing that makes any sense is a mechanical steering defect or possible driver distraction. This is such a shame.
It truly is.

I was just reading over this article once again for probably the hundredth time, and recently noticed a comment written by 'julie' on Nov 21 09. I never noticed this comment before, and after i read it I attempted to refrain myself from re-commenting on such an old article. However, These three young girls were my friends and we all went to high school together and your post, Julie.. it an insult. The child will not grow up without their mom because of these drivers "screw up". It was an accident, alcohol, drugs, and speed were all not factors in this crash.
Nobody intended on taking a parent from a baby, but if you didn't notice.. three sets of parents lots their babies that day as well and you need to open your eyes and look at the bigger picture. Sure, its sad that this child dosent have a mom, but she was not the only victim.
