ONTARIO - A head-on multi-vehicle collision closed Highway 7 between Spitzig Road and Greenhouse Road for more than four hours on Saturday and sent one of the drivers to hospital in critical condition.
Sergeant Dave Woodford of the Ontario Provincial Police said the collision happened just before 11 a.m. when a red Hyundai travelling westbound crossed over the centre line into the eastbound lane for unknown reasons, hitting a Ford Windstar van. The Hyundai then spun out and also struck a Honda Civic that was travelling westbound.
Police re-routed traffic from both directions between Kitchener and Guelph following the crash. They re-opened the road just after 3:30 p.m.
Woodford said the male drivers of all three vehicles were sent to area hospitals, with the driver of the Hyundai ending up at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The driver of the Windstar was sent to Grand River hospital in Kitchener with serious but not life-threatening injuries while the third driver was treated for minor injuries in Guelph hospital.
The police are still investigating the collision but Woodford said charges are pending. No names have been released.
Woodford said an air ambulance was dispatched but later called off after three other ambulances transported the injured to area hospitals.

texting, reaching around into the backseat, reading a map, reaching into the glove box, dialing a phone, digging around in a bag for chapstick - all things that cause drivers to veer out of lanes ... pull over. thanks.
