Liberal Kuldip Kular facing charge of leaving scene of collision steps down as parliamentary assistant

ONTARIO - An Ontario politician facing a charge of leaving the scene of a collision has officially stepped down from his duties as parliamentary assistant to the health minister.

Liberal Kuldip Kular was issued a traffic ticket in connection with an incident in Brampton last month that sent a pedestrian to hospital with minor injuries.

Police say that failing to remain at the scene of a collision isn't a criminal offence and if found guilty, he faces a fine.

A spokeswoman for the premier says Kular has stepped down to stay close to his riding of Bramalea-Gore-Malton.

Police say Kular, 60, was driving around 7 p.m. on Oct. 23 when a 39-year-old man was struck in a collision in which the pedestrian had the right of way.

Witnesses told investigators they saw the driver get out of a silver sedan and speak to the victim before taking off, leaving the pedestrian with a cut on his forearm and bruises all over his body.

Kular, a doctor by profession, also serves on the standing committee on general government.
