BRITISH COLUMBIA - The 17-year-old North Saanich girl who died in a car crash on Monday has been identified as Polly Tom.
Tom was killed Monday just before 2 a.m. when her car went off the road in the 8100 block of West Saanich Road, just north of Mt. Newton Cross Road. The red van she was driving struck a utility pole, snapping it in half, and ended up in the bush beside the roadway.
Tom was found inside the van and pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have not determined the cause of the crash but speed and alcohol have not been ruled out as factors, said Central Saanich police spokeswoman Cpl. Janis Jean.
An autopsy and toxicology tests will be conducted, Jean said.
"We are still investigating all avenues of what could have caused [the crash]."
The 22-year-old female passenger who was thrown from the vehicle was released from hospital Monday.
An obituary in the Times Colonist said: "A unique 17-year-old, Polly understood the value of family, her relationships with others as well as her culture."

One person dead in car crash on West Saanich Road
BRITISH COLUMBIA - A 17-year-old North Saanich girl died after the van she was driving left the road early yesterday morning in Central Saanich.
Cpl. Janis Jean of Central Saanich police said just before 2 a.m., officers responded to a report of a loud crash. Police, firefighters and paramedics arrived to find a red van had gone off the road in the 8100-block of West Saanich Road, just north of Mt. Newton Cross Road. The van appeared to have been travelling south. It struck a utility pole, snapping it in half, before coming to rest in a bushy area adjacent to the roadway.
Police say no other vehicles were involved.
Officers found a 22-year-old West Shore woman who had been thrown from the van.
She was taken to Victoria General Hospital by ambulance, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Jean said.
The teen was found inside the van and pronounced dead at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt. It's not known whether the passenger was buckled in.
A police dog was brought in to search for any other passengers who might have been thrown clear of the vehicle, but none were found, and it was determined the two women were the only vehicle occupants.
A Saanich police collision reconstruction expert and a B.C. coroner are investigating.
Jean could not say whether weather, road conditions or alcohol were involved. However, she noted that West Saanich Road is a long, winding, rural road that is unlit in some sections.
Police were notifying the teen's next of kin yesterday and did not release any names.
