Stolen car crashed into parked cars and driver tries to run away

ONTARIO -
A man in a stolen car led police on a chase through the downtown before crashing into parked cars early Friday morning, police said.

Sgt. Larry Charmley said police got a call about a stolen car in the north end at about 2:30 a.m. By 4:30 a.m. an officer saw the car in the area of Hunter and George streets police said.

With the officer in pursuit, the driver didn't stop, driving through several traffic lights and stop signs, police said.

The car collided with some parked vehicles in the area of Simcoe and Stewart streets and the driver ran away, police said.

"It was a very short pursuit," Charmley said. "When he crashed the vehicle, he was still able to get out before we got to him. Then he tried fleeing on foot."

When police searched the car they found a small amount of cocaine, prescription medication and stolen property taken from other vehicles that they believe had broken into during the night, police said.

Some of the stolen property included a GPS device, Canadian Tire money, loose change, cigarettes and a necklace, Charmley said.

"It was just random, typical things you find that people leave in their vehicle," he said.

Charmley did not have a dollar value on the drugs or stolen property.

The driver was not injured as a result of the collision, police said.

Damages to all the vehicles is estimated at about $3,000, police said.

Daniel Landry, 21, of Emily Township, is charged with two counts of possession of stolen property – one over $5,000 and one under $5,000, driving while disqualified, failing to remain at the scene of a collision, dangerous operation of a vehicle, two counts of breach of probation, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, failing to stop for a red light, failing to stop for police and driving without proper headlights. (Wow, Daniel, sounds like you've got your life-plan all mapped out here ... not too shabby for a 21-year-old - Peter)

He was in court on Friday and remanded into custody, Charmley said.
