BRITISH COLUMBIA -
Two teenage men were arrested and charged last night after Saanich Police watched what they thought to be dangerous street-racing.

Around 9 p.m. Saturday night, officers were on a routine traffic watch in the 3500-block of Shelbourne Street. They saw two vehicles neck-and-neck, travelling southbound at more than 110 km/h in a 50 km/h speed zone.

As police attempted to catch up to the vehicles, they watched them stop at a red light at Hillside Avenue and then speed up in competition as the light turned green – driving 80 km/h in a residential neighbourhood.

The drivers, a 19-year-old Victoria man and an 18-year-old Saanich man, were eventually stopped and arrested.

They were issued 15-day driving suspensions and had their vehicles impounded for 48 hours – in accordance with recent street-racing legislation. They were charged with speeding and driving without due care, carrying a total of $851 in fines.

Police remind the public of the dangers of street racing and encourage all witnesses of such behaviour to come forward.
