Women, 30, killed in rollover in RM of St. Andrews

Source: CTV Winnipeg

MANITOBA -
A 30-year-old Gimli woman is dead after the vehicle she was driving in rolled in the RM of St. Andrews Wednesday morning, said Selkirk RCMP.

The woman was travelling southbound in an SUV on Highway 8, near Highway 67, when the vehicle rolled at around 5:50 a.m.

The victim was taken to Seven Oaks Hospital and then transferred to Health Sciences Centre, where she was pronounced dead, said RCMP.

Police believe the woman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The woman's 35-year-old husband was in the passenger seat and was taken to hospital in Selkirk in stable condition following the crash. Police believe he was wearing a seatbelt.

Icy road conditions are considered a factor in the rollover.

RCMP are reminding people that road conditions are changing with the weather and motorists should adjust their driving.

People think SUVs are safer (for them, stuff everyone else) but not only are they more likely to kill other road users, they are also more likely to roll over and crush their drivers.

Several studies conducted over the years have shown that people who drive SUVs and CUVs will take more risks than others and tend to believe that being behind the wheel of a large all-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicle means they can drive in bad weather at the same speed they do in clear, dry conditions.

Sadly, ice is ice and doesn't discriminate.

Some thoughts on False sense of security when driving and in particular with SUVs.

More on this site about the topic.

The marketing job for SUVs is second to none and people fall for it. But I digress.
