ALBERTA -
The Edmonton medical examiner has identified the driver of a stolen van who died in a crash after being chased by RCMP near Hinton earlier this month.

Stephen Kenyon, 21, was behind the wheel of a van that collided with an oncoming pickup truck as Kenyon allegedly sped the wrong way down the Yellowhead with RCMP cruisers in pursuit.

Kenyon was wanted at the time of the crash on an outstanding warrant for shoplifting, and investigators say the van he was driving was stolen.

The collision also killed the driver of the pickup, a 30-year-old Leduc derrick-man named Brad Kerfoot.

The crash is still under investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), a unit that investigates incidents involving officers that lead to serious injury or death.

RCMP first became aware of the van around 5 p.m. on Nov. 19, when an officer in Jasper reported a minivan driver speeding.

A cruiser caught up to the van at the park gates and tried to pull it over with lights and sirens, but the driver refused to stop. The Jasper officer opted not to pursue the van. Instead, Hinton RCMP were told the speeding driver was heading in their direction.

In Hinton, two RCMP cruisers signalled the driver to pull over, but the van pulled into oncoming traffic and accelerated. The minivan sped east through Hinton, weaving into oncoming traffic then back into the correct lane, ASIRT head Clifton Purvis said after the crash.

Roughly one kilometre east of the town, the van collided head-on with Kerfoot's pickup.

How odd.

The RCMP issued a release saying the family didn't want the accused's name release citing privacy legislation.

We'll keep an eye on whether this changes. Amazing that this media outlet got the name.
