NOVA SCOTIA - An elderly man is dead after a crash between an ambulance and a car near Stewiacke on Highway 102.
Sgt. Al Afleck with RCMP says the ambulance was heading towards Halifax around 5 p.m. Sunday with a patient from Cape Breton. It hit a car head on that was driving towards Truro.
"Lost control, crossed the median and struck a Chevy Cobalt that was travelling northbound," says Afleck.
"The impact caused the death of a 78-year-old gentleman named Arthur Lawson Carter."
Paul Maynard with Emergency Health Services says the fatality has hit them hard. "Our paramedics are out there every day trying to help people so it really plays on all our staff when something like this happens," says Maynard. "Certainly a really sad story."
The roads were wet, however the skies fairly clear at the time. RCMP think the ambulance caught the shoulder and lost control.
The ambulance driver and second paramedic and the patient all had minor injuries.

Driver dies in car, ambulance collision
NOVA SCOTIA - The driver of a car was killed in a collision with an ambulance on Sunday near Stewiacke, N.S.
The crash happened just before 5 p.m. on Highway 102.
The ambulance was on its way to Halifax when it swerved across the median and smashed into an oncoming car, killing the driver, said Paul Maynard, spokesman for Nova Scotia Emergency Health Services.
The two paramedics and the female patient inside the ambulance were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The RCMP is investigating the crash. The ambulance service is also conducting its own investigation.
"Road conditions across the province at the time were extremely poor in a lot of areas, so that may have been a contributing factor to the collision," said Maynard.
The crash was one of 40 that the ambulance service responded to on Sunday, he said.
