Driving at the speed of stupid in Bradford West Gwillimbury, ON - 19 year old guy slams into stopped and lights flashing cop cruiser on Highway 400

Gee, text message much?

I don't know how else someone misses flashing blue lights, intercepted with red lights, unless this jerk fell asleep at the wheel which is likely, considering the hour.

Perhaps he should have put the Wii away and gone to bed at a decent hour?! - Cindy

From the OPP Highway Division
Media Release

(Bradford, ON.) – OPP officers from the Highway Safety Division are investigating a motor vehicle collision involving a GMC Suburban and an OPP Cruiser on Hwy 400, just south of Canal Rd, in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.

On Thursday December 10, 2009 at approximately 5:00 am, an officer while stopped investigating a collision in the left lane of Hwy 400 with the emergency lights activated, was rear-ended by the driver of a GMC Suburban that was travelling southbound in the left passing lane. This driver did not move over or slow down for the emergency vehicle.

The cruiser ended up in the centre median ditch and struck the vehicle that was being towed from the collision the officer had been investigating. Both the rear and the front of the cruiser were severely damaged. The officer who was in the cruiser at the time was transported to hospital with minimal injuries.

The driver of the Suburban, a 19 year old male from Gilford, Ontario, was not injured in the collision. Charges are pending.

Ontario traffic law requires all drivers, when approaching and passing emergency vehicles with their emergency lights activated, to SLOW DOWN and MOVE OVER.

The OPP’s Traffic Support Unit is assisting with this investigation and is asking anyone with information in relation to this collision to contact Provincial Constable Ishverbhai Lad at the Aurora OPP Detachment at (905) 841-5777.
