QUEBEC - Slippery road conditions proved deadly for one man who died this morning in a crash on Highway 73 in Beauce.

Police say the driver of a car lost control on a bridge and collided with a trailer being pulled by the driver of a pickup truck. The car then slammed into a guardrail, killing the driver.

The crash happened on the bridge over the Chassé river leading police to believe that a patch of black ice was a factor in this crash.

The passenger in the demolished car survived the crash but sustained serious injuries.

No names have been released.

Black ice forms on bridges and overpasses where air circulates above and below an elevated surface. It can be easy to spot if a driver is aware of what to look for. Spots on the road that are darker than the asphalt indicate black ice.

When driving at night in below zero temperatures, always reduce your speed on bridges and overpasses. Even if you have been cruising down a highway with no problem, an overpass or bridge can be unexpectedly icy and deadly.
