QUEBEC - A 14-year-old girl out walking her dog was killed Friday evening after being struck by a van in St. Anicet.

Police said the girl was killed around 6:30pm after she walked off the shoulder of Route 132 westbound. For reasons not known, the girl attempted to cross the busy roadway which has a speed limit of 80 km/hr.

The driver of the van, also traveling westbound, was unable to avoid hitting her. The teenager was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Valleyfield, where she was declared dead.

"It is not clear why the crash occurred. Alcohol is not involved and the teen was not wearing an iPod," said Sergeant Claude Denis of the Sûreté du Québec in an interview with the QMI News Agency.

As for the driver not being able to see the teen, Denis said, "The road is straight and clear, there is no curve in this area."

The driver and passengers in the van sustained no injuries in the incident.
