Police charge young driver in northern Ontario after cruiser rammed

Source: The Record

ONTARIO -
A young driver has been remanded in custody on numerous charges following a police pursuit through Fort Frances, Ont.

Provincial police, who are not releasing the driver's age, say it started Sunday when police tried to pull over a young driver who they allege was not wearing a seatbelt.

Police allege the driver refused to stop and led two cruisers to a dead end, where the vehicle turned around and rammed one of the cruisers at high speed. An officer jumped out of the way to avoid being hit.

A short time later, another police vehicle was struck before officers were able to partially stop the car. As officers tried to remove the driver and two passengers, the suspect tried to drive away, dragging two officers a short distance before the vehicle was stopped again.

The incident ended with a brief foot chase.

One young person faces three-counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, two-counts of mischief under $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police.
