ALBERTA -
The steady snow and poor road conditions Wednesday and Thursday continue to take their toll on Calgary commuters, as one man was seriously injured after his car crashed into two semis in southeast Calgary last night.

Police say that, at about 8 p.m., a southbound Chevrolet Malibu driven by the man went through a stop sign at 88th Street S.E. and entered the intersection with Marquis of Lorne Trail. The car then collided with an eastbound semi, and the impact sent the Malibu into another semi turning northbound onto 88th Street.

The male driver of the car, 35, is in serious condition. The semis' drivers were not injured.

Police say it was snowing when the crash happened, and the roads were icy. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision.

Another crash - this one just south of Airdrie - sent a woman to hospital Wednesday morning. Her SUV slid across the median on Highway 2 and crashed into a semi.

A number of incidents have already popped up this morning around the city, with at least five cases being reported by 7 a.m. by the Calgary Roads Department. This followed snarled traffic during the rush-hour commute last evening, where several major roads were hampered by high volume of cars trying to negotiate poor roads throughout Calgary. A woman had to give birth in a southwest parking lot after the vehicle she was in could not get to the hospital in time.

Snow has been steadily falling in the city since 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to Environment Canada, with a break coming only at 1 a.m. this morning.

Flurries are in the forecast for the rest of the week, with the next sunny day expected next Tuesday.
