Collapses at home, coroner rules collision caused brain injury

ONTARIO -
Hamilton police and the coroner’s office have determined the death 82-year-old city woman who died five days after a minor collision was due to the crash.

Savina Carbone, 82, died Nov. 29 in hospital after she complained of a constant headache and collapsed at home two days after the Nov. 24 collision on Wilson Street East in Ancaster. Her death is the 17th traffic fatality in Hamilton so far this year.

Hospital tests indicated she had suffered a brain injury which the coroner determined was caused by whiplash in the collision.

The initial three-car collision, on Wilson near Montgomery Drive was investigated by uniform patrol officers and an 18-year-old Mount Hope woman was charged with careless driving.

Two elderly passengers — including Carbone — in one of the cars sustained what were believed as minimal injuries that did not require medical attention.

After Carbone died in hospital, the coroner’s office along with the Hamilton police collision reconstruction unit, continued to investigate. and determined her injury was caused by whiplash from the collision.
