Several charges laid against company, driver following Richmond Hill traffic stop

Several charges have been laid against the driver of a truck and a construction company following a traffic stop in Richmond Hill Wednesday morning.

Police pulled over a 2004 Ford truck and trailer loaded with sod near Major Mackenzie Drive and Shirley Road at about 10:30 a.m.

The tires of the trailer were bulging and the trailer appeared to be overweight, police said.

After calling in a commercial vehicle inspector, the trailer was weighted and found to be over its registered weight limit, having improper and worn tires and the driver was not properly licenced to driver the tractor trailer.

A 36-year-old Toronto man is charged with driving a commercial motor vehicle with an improper licence, overweight vehicle violation, improper t ires, failure to complete a daily inspection report, not having the entire licence plate visible, failure to surrender a permit for a trailer, failure to surrender an insurance card and failure to surrender a commercial vehicle operator’s registration certificate.

His company is charged with permitting a person with improper licencing to drive a commercial vehicle, operation of a commercial vehicle without a valid commercial certificate, improper brakes on a trailer, improper tires on a draw vehicle.

Drivers and operators of commercial motor vehicles are responsible for ensuring that their vehicles and loads are inspected and safe before going on the road.

Any defect can result in the vehicle being removed from road. A commercial motor vehicle inspector has the option of holding a vehicle until the defect is repaired or of immediately removing the vehicles’ license plates.
