Survivors of fatal Island Park crash face long recovery: police

Source: Ottawa Citizen

ONTARIO -
Three men injured in a fatal October collision on Island Park Drive are still in hospital, Ottawa police said Friday.

“They’ll probably have a long rehabilitation ahead of them,” said Det. Greg Rhoden. He could not provide specific details on their injuries.

Rhoden is investigating the Oct. 31 crash that killed 21-year-old Andrew Downey.

Police said Downey and three friends were driving south on Island Park Drive from the Champlain Bridge around 3:15 a.m. when the driver lost control and flipped the car. Downey died of his injuries in hospital.

“It looks like speed was a contributing factor,” Rhoden said, noting the investigation was not yet complete.

He also said alcohol had not been ruled out as a cause. Charges may yet be laid, he said.

Friends described Downey — who was a passenger in the car — as a friendly and outgoing sports fanatic.
