SASKATCHEWAN -
A 21-year-old man has been charged in a four-vehicle crash that injured two people -- one of them seriously -- in Regina this weekend.

Ryan Malcolm Taypotat has been charged with two counts of hit and run causing bodily harm for the Saturday morning crash. He is not in custody and is slated to appear in court on Jan. 7.

The crash happened just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of Atkinson Street. The initial collision involved a car and an SUV, which is alleged to have been driven by Taypotat.

After the initial impact, the car hit a parked vehicle and a house, and both people were sent to hospital with injuries described at the time as serious. The SUV also appeared to have hit a parked vehicle, and was severely damaged at the scene.

Two injured in Regina four-vehicle crash

SASKATCHEWAN -
A four-vehicle crash on a quiet residential street sent two people to hospital, saw a car careen into a house, and had people running from the scene.

"We're trying to piece it together," Sgt. Darren Wilcox said. The collision occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and collision reconstruction investigators remained at the site for five hours as they attempted to sort out exactly what had occurred.

A man and woman were taken to hospital in serious condition after being freed from their compact car by firefighters using the Jaws of Life. On Sunday, Wilcox said the woman passenger, believed to have been more seriously injured, still remained in hospital. The man was released.

Their car had gone out of control, skidded through a hedge, before striking the front of a house, owned by a retired Regina police officer, on the 2200 block of Atkinson Street. A car parked nearby on the street had front-end damage.

A neighbour to the home that was hit said the impact rocked his house.

"I heard it. It even shook my house, like an earthquake," Bill Dickin said. He saw the tire tracks in the snow, the car rammed up against the front of his neighbour's house, and ran to check on the two occupants, who appeared semi-conscious.

As he surveyed the damage littering the snow-covered street, Dickin added, "It was quite a pinball effect."

A half block away, hip hop music was still blaring from a severely damaged SUV stopped across two lanes in the middle of the street in front of a church. Both airbags had gone off, and an open beer bottle sat in the front-seat cup holder.

The keys remained in the ignition of the vehicle, but it's occupants were absent. According to witnesses, at least three young people were seen running from the vehicle in the aftermath of the crash.

Police said some people were subsequently taken into custody a short time later and questioned.

As of Sunday, police would only say charges are pending.

In a driveway adjacent to the SUV sat another damaged car, it's tire askew. The car had been pushed from the driveway where it had been parked and onto a neighbouring lot, taking out a small tree in the process.

Surveying the wreckage outside his townhouse, Dave Ballagh said, "The noise -- I thought someone had hit the condo."

"It's just weird on a Saturday morning," he said, adding that the real tragedy was further up the road.

"Down the way, those people aren't as fortunate."
