Whitehorse man dead following Toad River crash

BRITISH COLUMBIA - A 64 year old Whitehorse resident was killed yesterday, when a tractor trailer unit, headed for the Yukon capital, left the Alaska Highway and went over an embankment near Toad River, west of Fort Nelson.

The Fort Nelson RCMP received word of the crash at about 2:30 in the afternoon, and says preliminary investigation reveals, the deceased driver of the truck failed to negotiate a turn at the Racing River Bridge.

He was the lone occupant of the Edmonton-based, Direct Transport Kenworth, which smashed into one of the main support girders of the bridge, before jumping the guard rail and rolling down the embankment next to the Racing River.

The fully loaded trailer, went further down the embankment, spilling it's entire grocery cargo onto the river ice.

The crash remains under police investigation.
