Two teens dead after 17 year old driver loses control while speeding. Keele Street crash in York Region "worst" officer has ever seen

Family members had asked that the names of the teens killed in this crash after the driver lost control at high speed not be released.

However, The Toronto Sun newspaper has published a story describing the road-side tribute for the two boys killed. Friends have gathered to create a memorial at the crash site for Ryan Sheridan and Niko Di Iorio.

I would still like to extend my deepest sympathies to those families.

The 17 year old driver was thrown from the car and died at the scene. A 15 year old passenger was also killed. Another 15 year old is in hospital.

This is not what we should want for our children, for our teen drivers. No one deserves to die on a cold road. No one.

This crash needs to call parents to action. Parents can no longer rely on the bare minimum driving instruction these kids receive often through driving schools that teach only what your teen needs to know to pass the road test. Even more alarming is these same schools book road tests in small towns with minimal traffic, no highways, very little signage and no real world driving environment.

If your teen plans to be driving in the GTA, your teen needs to be prepared to handle real traffic.

It. is. time. to. WAKE UP.

Road tests are supposed to be hard. Why are parents bending over backwards to make getting a driver's licence easy for their teen drivers? We get emails from many parents asking us to recommend driving schools who book outside of the GTA or ask for tips for passing the road tests. They want their children to pass with minimal effort. This is terrifying. Driving is a dangerous responsibility. It's not a math test!

Two kids are DEAD. There's no going back! It's too late for them. It's not too late for their friends and it's not to late for parents to realize they need to do more.

Enroll your teens in comprehensive driving schools where they are taught how to control a car at high speed, how to steer out of a skid, how to pass and overtake vehicles in real traffic.

I'm not stupid. I know teens will push the limit and I know teens will drive too fast when it's obviously not safe or even legal to do so. But can your kid handle it? If you can't answer that question you need to find out.

In this crash, police say the driver lost control while speeding northbound on Keele Street - heading to his destination with his friends to a ski resort north of Toronto.

Suddenly, a change in road condition (the preliminary police investigation has revealed he drifted onto the gravel shoulder) caused him to react badly, probably because he hadn't been taught or trained what to do. He over-corrected, say police. He swerved across the road, struck the ditch and the car slammed into a tree.

It was a crash so violent, Const. Mike Buchanan of York Region police told the Toronto Star it was the "most horrific crash" he has seen in 15 years.

Speeding in excess of the posted limit has no place on public roads. A sudden change in road condition, unpredictable traffic, animals crossing, tires blowing or obstruction can result in fatal consequences if drivers don't understand why speeding is dangerous if you lack the skills for how to handle it. Dying in a car crash or being injured in one is no way to learn. This is a ludicrous way to think. If your kid has a history of speeding or doesn't seem to understand why backroads are not their personal racetrack, you need to put them on a real track.

If you're a parent and this crash hits home for you, it should. You can't ignore this. It can happen to your family. You could get that knock on the door, just like thousands of parents before you. You don't want it. Trust me.
