ONTARIO - A police chase through Smiths Falls, south east of Ottawa, had motorists stopping along the highway to scoop up thousands of contraband cigarettes scattered on the road on Friday.

Ontario Provincial Police say the chase started on Highway 43 near Merrickville when a pickup truck ignored a traffic stop.

As the suspect took off, contraband cigarettes flew out of the vehicle littering the roadway with smokes.

Police followed the cigarettes along Highway 15 where they found the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop the driver again. Although spike belts were set up, they failed to stop the vehicle.

The truck continued to travel south entering the City of Kingston. Cigarettes were still flying out of the vehicle.

The chase continued to Highway 401 where police vehicles were used to stop the suspect, causing him to lose control of his truck. The vehicle struck the guard rail and rolled, scattering more cigarettes across the east and westbound lanes.

Police arrested the male driver who faces several charges, including dangerous driving, escape by flight and possession of contraband tobacco.

A female passenger was taken to hospital in Kingston to be assessed for minor injures.

Once again, the photographer should be so proud to have taken a photo from the drivers seat. I can only assume the driver was DRIVING past the scene.

Seriously, is this an illness? The inability to GRASP and follow the rules and laws of the land?

Ha! What else can I expect - just looked at her Twitter and saw this:

Dear Ottawa Police: That blue Suzuki GSXR that bolted past you...thank you for not chasing it. 9:55 AM Jun 13th via web

Lovely.

(I am sure you can't post this but I had to say it anyway)

I hope those nicotine addicted people at least pulled over to the side of the 401 before getting out of their vehicles to steal those illegal cigarettes !
